The perennial Good Heinrich provides us with an abundance of spicy-tasting leaves year after year. But first he has to enter the bed as a small seed. If the sowing is optimally set, strong and healthy plants will quickly grow from it.
You can also collect the seeds yourselfOptimal time for sowing
The gardener does not have to hurry with the sowing of this type of vegetable. He has a window of at least 12 weeks to do this.
- Sowing is possible from March
- Guter Heinrich can be sown until the end of May
- the second sowing period is from September to October
Since Good Henry doesn't fear the frost, you can sow at any time during the two time periods mentioned above. However, the sooner you plant the seed, the sooner you can harvest.
Order seeds
A hundred grains for one euro, that's all you ask for seed on the market. Even organic seeds are still affordable for everyone at twice the price. Although the vegetable is still a rarity in gardens these days, the seeds are available in many shops, so there is never a problem in obtaining them.
Prepare bed
After you have found a sunny or partially shaded location for Good Heinrich, you should prepare the bed for sowing. For this purpose, the soil is deeply loosened and enriched with a long-term fertilizer such as horse manure. Nitrogen is an important element for its successful cultivation.
Sow good Heinrich
The seed is sown thinly and only lightly pressed, since the good Heinrich is one of the so-called light germinators. Since it also grows over several years, it only has to be sown every 5 to 6 years at a different location. The plants flower from the second year and easily self-seed if you do not remove the seed pods early.
Separate young plants
As soon as tender plants have developed from the seed, they must be separated. The optimal distance between two rows and between two plants is 50 cm, because the good Heinrich takes up a lot of space around himself over time.
tips
Already 6 to 8 weeks after sowing, you can pick some of the tender leaves and use them in the kitchen like spinach.
