From the dwarf astilbe to the tall astilbe, there are numerous varieties in varying shades of white, pink, red and purple. The growth height ranges from about 10 cm to two meters. This is enough choice for every gardener.

The garden astilbe can grow to over a meter tall

Astilbes are hardy, fairly hardy and don't require too much care. Since they are not poisonous, they are well suited to family gardens. The flowering time varies depending on the species and variety from May to September. If you plant the different varieties in a targeted manner, you can enjoy the feathery flowers all summer long.

Low-staying astilbes

The Astilbes that stay low include the Chinese chinensis (Astilbe chinensis), they grow to about 50 to 60 cm in size and only show their pink flowers relatively late. The "Pumila" variety even tolerates a sunny location. It only grows to 20 to 25 cm and has lilac-pink flowers from July to September. It belongs to the carpet astilbes, also called dwarf astilbes.

The Astilbe simplicifolia, the Small Astilbe, also remains very small with a growth height of up to 50 cm. It originally comes from Japan and is available in different shades. In July, the small Astilbe hybrida crispa, which is about 15 to 20 cm long, flowers and its foliage is reminiscent of curly parsley. The Astilbe simplicifolia grows very dainty, the flower panicles overhang slightly.

High-growing splendor

The tall astilbe (Astilbe chinensis var. davidii) is the largest of the known cultivated astilbes with a growth height of 1.5 to 2 m. The garden astilbe (Astilbe x arendsii) is also relatively high at 60 to 120 cm. These include, for example, the white-flowering variety "Bergkristall" with a growth height of about one meter.
