Hydrangeas are gaining popularity after a few years when the plant was considered old-fashioned. In order for the hydrangea to thrive, it is not only important to give it the right care. The timing of the onset is also crucial for growth.

Bare root hydrangeas are planted in the fall

Plant bare root hydrangeas in the fall

Hydrangeas, where the roots have to do without a protective pot and soil, are always planted in autumn. This gives you the opportunity to root well until spring. On the other hand, if you put these plants in the ground in the spring, the hydrangea would first have to concentrate on root growth. It would therefore only sprout very sparingly.

Planting time for hydrangeas in the container

These hydrangeas are grown in plastic pots and, unlike bare-rooted plants, can be transplanted all year round. They suffer no root injury shock and continue to thrive without any problems.

These hydrangeas grow particularly quickly when planted in spring. With a bit of luck, the hydrangea will produce new flowers in the same year. Alternatively, fall is a good time to get container perennials in the ground.

Treatment of hydrangea after purchase

  • Water the hydrangea sufficiently. Dip the root ball of container plants before planting until no more air bubbles rise. Soak bare-root hydrangeas in water for two hours to allow the roots to soak up moisture.
  • Plant bare-root perennials as quickly as possible. If this is not possible, wrap roots in a damp cloth and store the hydrangeas in the shade. Keep moistening the jute. Exposed roots do not tolerate cold, sun or wind.
  • In case of sudden frosts that make planting impossible, move hydrangea to a frost-free and wind-protected place and cover. If there is permafrost in autumn, put the hydrangea in a pot and overwinter indoors.

tips

Indoor hydrangeas can also be transplanted into the bed. It is advisable to slowly acclimate these hydrangeas, which are usually grown in greenhouses, to the outdoors. First place the pot on the terrace for a while so that the plant can adapt to the changed conditions.
