The Deutzia is also called May flower bush or star bush. The ornamental shrub owes this name to its flowers, which appear as early as May and often have the shape of small stars. The plant, which belongs to the hydrangea family, comes in numerous variations.

Depending on the variety, the Deutzia flowers snow-white to pale pink

From the dwarf shrub to the giant Deutzia

The height of Deutzia is quite different. Some dwarf varieties grow to just 80 centimeters when fully grown. At four meters, it towers over other varieties.

Small varieties are particularly suitable for hedges or keeping in buckets. Large Deutzia varieties cut a fine figure as eye-catchers in the garden.

The different flower colors and flower shapes

The predominant color of the deutcia flowers is white. There is now a whole range of varieties with pink and even red flowers. The flowers can be double or single. Some deutcia flowers give off a light, very pleasant scent, while others have no scent at all.

The flower shapes also vary. Some shrubs flower in long, downward curving racemes. But there are also Deutzia whose flowers appear in clusters.

Pruning can often bring about a second flowering season in the fall.
