Beard flowers have become very popular ornamental shrubs in the garden and on the terrace. The mostly blue-flowering shrubs provide color in the garden when most of the summer flowers have already faded. There are now a large number of breeds, some of which are also conditionally hardy.

Depending on the variety, the beard flower blooms deep blue to pale pink

Worth knowing about beard flowers

The beard flower (botanical name: Caryopteris x clandonensis) is originally native to China. It is a half-height ornamental shrub that can be planted in the garden and in tubs.

Most varieties are only conditionally hardy. They need winter protection in winter or have to be overwintered in a bucket indoors.

Good bee pasture

Most bearded flowers produce blue flowers. With "Autumn Pink" there is now a variety with pink inflorescences for the first time.

Depending on the variety, the foliage of the beard flower is also very decorative. This is particularly true of "Worcester Gold", whose leaves are golden yellow.

Beneficial insects such as bees and bumblebees are magnetically attracted to the bright flowers. The non-toxic beard flowers are therefore also often planted as bee pasture.

tips

The leaves of the bearded beard are often slightly hairy and exude a delicate, sometimes stronger scent. This keeps lice and other pests away.
