Basically, the lady's eye is not very demanding in the right location and can also cope well with dry slopes. With the right care, you can get even more lifespan and abundance of flowers out of your "beautiful faces".

The girl's eye needs one thing above all: lots of water

How often should the girl's eye be watered?

A layer of mulch on the soil can reduce soil drying out and thus the frequency of watering. The damsel's eye does not need a lot of water, but due to its preferred sunny location, it should be protected from drying out, especially in summer. Potted plants need to be watered a little more regularly than outdoor plants, ideally early in the morning or in the evening with lime-free rainwater.

When and how can the girl's eye be repotted?

Perennials such as the lady's eye can usually be transplanted in early spring if they have not yet sprouted again. Since the perennial varieties of the girls' eye tend to age after more than three or four years in the same location, they should be carefully dug up, divided and transplanted every three to four years.

When and how should the girl's eye be cut?

In principle, various pruning measures are conceivable for the girl's eye:

  • the pruning of the previous year's herb in the spring
  • pruning after flowering in autumn
  • cutting out dead flowers
  • cutting out and destroying leaf material infested with powdery mildew

In particular, only partially hardy subspecies of the tickseed usually benefit from a pruning after flowering, when the plant is cut off just above the ground.

Which pests attack the girl's eye?

Young plants are susceptible to being eaten by snails and should therefore be given special protection. Mature perennials can occasionally be attacked by aphids.

Which measures are effective against diseases?

If the leaves of the damsel's eye dry up after they have been covered with a mealy coating, it is usually powdery mildew. Affected plant parts should be cut out immediately and burned in a controlled manner. Brown spots on the leaves and a musty smell can indicate root rot as a result of waterlogging.

Should the girl's eye be fertilized?

The lady's eye blooms particularly persistently if you regularly apply some compost to the perennial beds in spring and summer. Otherwise, special long-term and perennial fertilizers are suitable for the adequate supply of nutrients.

How is the girl's eye overwintered?

When overwintering perennial Coreopsis species, the following variants are possible:

  • overwintering with the withered plant mass as winter protection
  • pruning in autumn and covering with a layer of mulch
  • when overwintering in a pot: wrap in fleece and stand on the south side of a wall

tips

The sun-loving damsel's eye needs sufficient moisture for its full splendor during the flowering period, but does not tolerate waterlogging. Therefore, loamy soil outdoors or a plant pot should be provided with an appropriate drainage layer to prevent root rot or mold growth.
