Do not store spinach for more than two days. However, be sure to remove the plastic packaging, as the spinach will quickly begin to rot in it. Instead, wrap the leaves in a slightly damp kitchen towel and place them loosely in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator.

Since soil and dirt can stick to the leaves, they must be washed thoroughly before preparation:

  1. First, run cold water into the sink.
  2. Pluck the spinach leaves from the stalks and throw them in.
  3. Discard unsightly leaves.
  4. Move gently in the water with both hands.
  5. Remove and place in a colander.
  6. Fill the sink with fresh water and repeat the process until the water comes out completely clean.

If the vegetables are to be cooked, the spinach does not have to be spun. Pour this directly into the saucepan and do not add any more liquid.

Young, tender spinach tastes great in salads. To ensure the dressing adheres well, place the trimmed leaves in a salad spinner and dry thoroughly.

Cook spinach properly

In order to preserve as many nutrients as possible, spinach should only be steamed for a very short time. Place the dripping wet leaves in portions in a saucepan and simply let them collapse.

Then season the vegetables with a translucent onion, salt, pepper and a little nutmeg. If you like, you can strain the spinach and refine it with a little cream.

The aromatic leaves, left whole, are great in soups, gratins, casseroles or pizza.

Reheated spinach is not harmful to healthy adults. However, it is important to place the prepared vegetables in the refrigerator immediately after they have cooled. Before doing this, pour off the cooking water, as this contains a lot of harmful oxalic acid.
