Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or chokeberries - for the consumer it hardly matters whether the fruits are berries or other botanical fruit forms. From a botanical point of view, there are only a few true soft fruit varieties.

Real soft fruit

From a botanical point of view, only single, round berries are considered soft fruit. The most well-known varieties are:

  • Bilberry or blueberry
  • elderberry
  • currant
  • gooseberry
  • sea buckthorn
  • Cranberry or cranberry

Soft fruit is edible and generally grows on perennial plants.

Strictly speaking, many berries are not actually berries

Despite their name, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are not berries. These are collectible stone fruits.

Other fruits referred to as berries, such as the mulberry, are actually nuts.

Due to their shape, which is rounded, small and soft - i.e. without a shell - these fruits are also traded as berries.

tips and tricks

Tomatoes also fit the definition of soft fruit. However, they are classified as vegetables because they are annual plants.
