Water is a versatile design element in the garden. In addition to a garden or fish pond, a fountain or a playful water feature, there are also options for creating an artificial watercourse. For this purpose, we will introduce you to suitable watercourse bowls and tell you which criteria you should pay particular attention to when buying and setting up. Soon you can enjoy a babbling brook.

This popular Eder watercourse consists of three sections, each about 53 centimeters long, 40 centimeters wide and about eight centimeters high. They can be mounted to the left or right and result in a pretty, ca. 133 cm long, Mediterranean-style cascading watercourse. The stream is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic, which looks very similar to natural stone and is also insensitive to heat and frost. A water reservoir (e.g. a garden pond) and a separately purchased pump (capacity: 1000 liters per hour) are required for operation. You can also complement the watercourse with other parts in the same style, such as a spring or a small pond basin.

This three-part watercourse is also made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, which is very robust and resistant to heat and cold. In addition, the material is frost-resistant, so the stream bowls can stay outside in winter. The set consists of an initial element, which contains the hidden water inlet, and two similar water-bearing elements. With a horizontal structure, the watercourse overcomes a height difference of around 30 centimeters, depending on the orientation of the sub-elements. A separately purchased pump with an output of between 800 and a maximum of 1500 liters per hour is required for operation. The 16.5 mm hole for the hose is located in the starting element.

Köhko - the abbreviation for the Leipzig-based Könige Hausdeko GmbH - is the manufacturer of this chic watercourse made of polyresin. Polyresin is also called artificial stone and is characterized by its robustness against weather conditions such as sun, water, heat and frost as well as its longevity. With this set you get three components, each of which is approx. 51 centimeters long, 40 centimeters wide and eleven centimeters high. The individual elements can be flexibly installed so that the watercourse can point both to the left and to the right. A source connector can be purchased separately.
Purchase Criteria
material
Watercourse trays are available in a wide variety of materials, each with specific advantages and disadvantages. These can consist of natural and artificial raw materials.
natural stone: Of course, natural stone looks particularly realistic and is also very robust and durable - but also particularly heavy, which can be problematic when looking for a suitable location for the watercourse and during installation. A stable base is therefore a must!
fiberglass reinforced plastic: Glass fiber reinforced plastic scores with its robustness and weather resistance, and the material also allows a realistic representation of a "real" watercourse. GRP is externally very similar to granite, but much lighter and not quite as durable.
polyresin: Polyresin is also known as artificial stone because the material looks very similar to real natural stone. However, it is mostly cast from cement, minerals and/or resin. The advantage of this material is its authentic look and low weight, the disadvantage is that the paintwork often fades quickly.
polyethylene: The plastic polyethylene is frost and UV-resistant, and also very light. Therefore, a watercourse made of this material can be easily installed and, if necessary, removed again. On the other hand, an artificial stream made of PE looks exactly like this: artificial and not very lifelike.
metal: If you place less value on a lifelike design and are instead interested in a modern-looking watercourse, special stainless steel may be the right material.
Modular system or complete set?
You can purchase a watercourse as a complete set, but you can also design it yourself from matching individual parts. There are modular systems, as presented by us, which allow any expansion and free design. A complete set, on the other hand, is uncomplicated and can be installed quickly - but in most cases it cannot be expanded. When buying one, make sure that its dimensions fit in the space provided. In contrast, modular systems can be individually adapted to local conditions.
size
Watercourses are available in many different sizes, which of course have to match the circumstances in your garden. For example, a small stream looks rather lost to a large garden pond and cannot develop its effect at all, while a model that is too large does not fit the existing pond. It is therefore essential to pay attention to these dimensions: length, width and height of both the individual parts and the entire ensemble, the difference in height to be overcome and the required pump. This has to create a certain water flow per hour, whereby this can be calculated with a rule of thumb: shell width in centimeters times 1.5 times 60.
optics
Watercourses are available in many different designs, so you have a wide range of different design options to suit your garden style. We briefly introduce two popular styles.
cascade watercourse: A cascading watercourse is an artificial waterfall mostly composed of multiple elements and cascading down. Such a stream is very well suited to bridging smaller gradients. However, they need a powerful pump and are often quite noisy.
rocky landscape: A natural-looking rocky landscape can be a pretty eye-catcher in the garden, reminiscent of a babbling brook spring in the mountains. Such watercourses come in different sizes and even with lighting.
youtubefrequently asked Questions
Do you always have to drain the water from the watercourse in autumn?
Even if the material of the watercourse is frost-resistant, be sure to drain the water in the fall. This primarily protects the pump, which can be damaged by the cold.
What uses can I have for watercourse bowls?
With watercourse shells you can build different streams in the garden in no time at all, for example:
- as an additional decorative element for the garden pond
- as a connection between two garden ponds
- as a rippling water landscape
- for overcoming inclines, e.g. B. on a slope
In addition, use in free-range enclosures for pets, such as turtles, is also conceivable.
What is a watercourse made of?
In order to create an artificial watercourse, you not only need the appropriate components, but also a pump with the appropriate capacity, a hose, a source (e.g. a source element suitable for the selected system) and a water reservoir (usually the garden pond). The water runs from the source into the water reservoir and is then transported back to the source location by the pump via the hose.
Which location is right for the watercourse?
It is best to choose a spot where the watercourse is not exposed to the blazing sun. Algae grow faster in the sun (and you would have to clean the bowls more often), a lot of water evaporates and the artificial bowls made of different materials are damaged more quickly by UV light. A semi-shady to light-shading location is therefore recommended.
How can I decorate an artificial watercourse?
Stones (self-collected) are suitable for the near-natural decoration of an artificial watercourse. Pond pebbles and suitable aquatic or riparian plants that thrive in a damp environment. If the watercourse is wide and deep enough, you can also place the plants directly in the bowls in plant bags with substrate. However, be careful not to impair the flow of water and choose a location that is optimal for the plants.
Which plants do well near a watercourse?
Plants that thrive in a humid environment should be planted along the banks of the watercourse. In particular, robust and easy-care species such. B. hostas, astilbes, knotweed and carnations are recommended, as they are suitable for many locations and also attract useful insects into the garden.
