- What is particularly important when fertilizing?
If you take care of your maple, the sword of Damocles of a fungal infection is constantly hanging over the tree. The nutrient supply is no exception in this respect. Properly fertilizing your magnificent house tree depends not only on the nutrient composition, but also on the professional approach. This guide answers all questions.
The falling leaves in autumn are a natural fertilizerWhen is the best time to fertilize?
The composition of the fertilizer largely determines the right time for application. Organic fertilizer is pre-processed by soil organisms to make it available to plants. Mineral and mineral-organic fertilizers act immediately due to their chemical components. The following overview lists the best fertilizer dates:
- Organic fertilizer (compost, plant manure): in autumn and again in spring
- Mineral or mineral-organic fertilizer: Depending on the duration of the effect, apply once in spring or every 4-6 weeks
For potted maple, liquid fertilizer is perfect for practical reasons. The time of application extends from March/April to August/September.
Which fertilizers are recommended?
Nitrogen plays a secondary role in the balanced nutrient supply of maple trees. Native species in particular are fast-growing, so the additional supply of nitrogen causes massive cell growth and increases susceptibility to diseases. Therefore, give preference to organic fertilizers such as compost, horn shavings (32.93€) and plant manure. A maple should be spared the concentrated nitrogen load of mineral fertilizers such as blue grain.
What is particularly important when fertilizing?
Fertilizers are administered on the maple exactly where pathogens lurk for injuries as entry points. Gentle application of fertilizers is therefore just as important as quality. How to do it right:
- Always work in fertilizers superficially and carefully without damaging the roots
- Do not use fertilizer on dust-dry soil, but water it beforehand
- Pour in plenty of clear water
Ideally, start fertilization as part of the planting by enriching the excavation of the planting pit to a third with mature compost and horn shavings.
tips
Don't clear away the fall leaves under your maple. As a result of rapid decomposition, the leaves turn into rich humus, from which growth benefits. Only maple leaves with fungus should be removed completely and disposed of in the trash.
