A filter fleece, also known as a drainage fleece or garden fleece, is primarily used to prevent different soil layers (e.g. gravel and sand) from mixing. It is therefore mainly used when it comes to building terraces, raised beds, sandpits, paved or slab paths. We will introduce you to recommended products and explain what is particularly important when making a purchase.

Filter fleeces are used, for example, when greening roofs

Purchase Criteria

purpose of use

Which filter fleece you choose depends above all on the intended use. Garden fleece, which is primarily advertised as a weed fleece (€21.70), is not suitable as a separating fleece under foundations or paths. After all, they should prevent the weeds from growing and not the soil layers from mixing. The materials also known as separating, drainage or geofleeces are best suited for this purpose. Incidentally, you can also lay this as a protective layer under the pond liner or use special pond fleece.

material

Nowadays, plastics are usually used for filter fleece, as the coconut fibers used in the past decompose quickly and therefore have to be constantly replaced - which is difficult to do depending on the use. Polyester (PES) is often used instead, which is particularly tear-resistant, weatherproof and rot-proof as well as UV-stable thanks to a special manufacturing process.

grammage

The grammage means the weight of the fleece material per square meter and indicates its special strength. Drainage fleece often has a grammage of between 120 and 250 grams per square meter, which is perfectly adequate for most applications. Special separating nonwovens with a weight of more than 300 grams per square meter are usually only used in the professional construction industry and for very special purposes. However, keep in mind that the thicker the fleece, the less water permeability it has.

water permeability

The water permeability of a filter fleece is of great relevance for the diverse uses in the garden, since the material must not cause any accumulation. Especially for garden paths, but also in the bed or on the house wall, water-logging fleece can have unsightly consequences: Plants no longer grow in the waterlogged bed, puddles and veritable small lakes form on the new garden path after every downpour and water that is not drained from the house wall penetrates the foundations. Grammages between 120 and 200 grams per square meter are therefore completely sufficient for most purposes.

Dimensions

Filter fleece is usually sold in rolls that are 10, 20, 25 or 50 meters long and one or two meters wide. You cut the fleece to the desired length yourself when laying it and then lay it overlapping at the edges. The possible area in square meters with which the filter fleece can be covered is calculated from the information on length and width. Some rolls can also be up to four meters wide, and some manufacturers also sell pre-cut fleece.

durability

Another important purchase criterion is durability. The filter fleece must be made of a material that is rot-proof and therefore durable and can therefore remain in the ground for a very long time. Therefore, make sure that the UV stability (i.e. insensitivity to UV rays) as well as weather and temperature resistance (must withstand extreme frost and heat) are given. In addition, a filter fleece must be robust and tear-resistant, but still be easy to cut and lay.

frequently asked Questions

What is a filter fleece and why do you need it?

Filter fleece, also known as drainage fleece or geo-textile fleece, is primarily intended to prevent the mixing of different soil layers with different physical properties. This is important, for example, when building foundations and subsoil, especially since these can be reduced by using these fleeces. Water-permeable nonwovens also filter out various seeping particles.

Is it also possible to suppress weeds with a drainage fleece?

If you want to suppress weeds in the garden bed in the long term, we recommend using special weed fleeces that have been specially manufactured for this purpose and are tailored to the special needs of ornamental and crop plants. In contrast to weeds, these should ultimately continue to get water and nutrients in the soil, which necessitates special production processes.

Where do you lay filter fleece?

Filter and drainage fleeces, on the other hand, are mainly used in gardening and landscaping for these purposes:

  • as part of the foundation under the terrace
  • under paved areas and flagstone paths
  • under the raised bed, sandpit and large planters
  • in the construction of sports and riding arenas
  • in the construction of paddocks
  • for protection and drainage around the house
  • for roof greening
  • for protection under the pond liner

How do you lay filter fleece correctly?

When laying filter fleece, you should make sure that the ends overlap by ten to 15 centimeters so that nothing can seep through in these areas. Also take this into account when calculating the required amount of fleece, as you will have to order more material accordingly. You can also secure the overlapping ends (e.g. with special pegs) to prevent them from slipping.

How much does high-quality drainage fleece cost?

How much you have to spend on the drainage fleece depends primarily on the processing quality and the grammage. For a high-quality and long-lasting product, you should budget between one and one and a half euros per square meter - that means you need 50 square meters of fleece plus additional material for an area of 50 square meters to be covered, since the ends should overlap. In the end, you will get rid of about 75 EUR for such a small area.

Which manufacturers offer filter fleece of good quality?

Proven manufacturers of high-quality filter fleece are e.g. DeRiTex, HaGa, Pflanzenwerk, WESOM Textil GmbH, Dehner, Windhager, Aquagart and GardenGloss. The HaGa company is based in Nordstemmen near Hanover and has specialized in the production and sale of tarpaulins, nets and fleece for gardening and landscaping. WESOM Textil GmbH based in Olbersdorf near Zittau (Saxony) produces “technical and intelligent textiles”.
