To ensure that the moss still looks good in the Christmas crib, in the Easter basket or as a stylish moss picture, you should pay attention to a few things when harvesting. Once at home, the plant from the forest must be properly preserved so that it retains its green color for a long time.

Where can I find moss?
Outside of nature reserves, you are allowed to collect mosses in small quantities. Be very careful when doing this so as not to damage the delicate ecosystem. In the home garden, too, there are often moss deposits that you can use for decorative purposes.
The green plants can be found:
- at the foot of trees,
- on decaying trees,
- on the forest floor,
- On rocks in wet areas.
How is the moss collected
- So that the moss stays beautiful for a long time, you should collect plants that are as clean as possible.
- Carefully detach them from the substrate by hand.
- You can remove insects and small creatures by shaking and then put the greens in a basket.
- Collect only a small amount at a time to allow the stock to recover.
Preserving moss at home
The treatment with glycerine keeps the moss lush green and keeps its color for years.
For this you need:
- glycerin
- denatured alcohol.
Both products are available from pharmacies.
Proceed as follows for preservation:
- In a large bowl, add 2 parts glycerin and 1 part alcohol.
- Place plants in the mixture and let steep for ten to fifteen minutes.
- Drain and place on kitchen paper.
- After a few days, the moss is thoroughly dry and can be used again.
You can now glue the green into a deep frame or a tray with an attractive edge using a hot glue gun, for example, and thus create a visual eye-catcher for the apartment with simple means.
Preserve moss by drying
You can also preserve mosses by drying them. However, this causes the plants to lose their juicy coloring.
- Spread the cleaned growths out on a kitchen towel.
- In an airy, dark place, the moss will dry within a few days.
tips
Living moss, which is allowed to continue growing in a glass, looks particularly beautiful. Put some soil in a large screw-top jar, moisten it and put in some of the fresh moss you have collected. Decorated with rocks and twigs, it makes a pretty green room decoration that's also non-toxic to pets.
