Just like paving stones, grass pavers need a water-permeable layer that is also load-bearing. The entire surface must be excavated before laying. After laying, the gaps are filled.

This is how it's done
If you want to plant the spaces between lawn pavers, you must fill them with a suitable substrate. A layer of clay granules or split comes on top of the gravel substructure, which takes on the function of drainage and prevents waterlogging.
preparations
Dig the ground within an area demarcated with sticks. The depth depends on the thickness of the grass paver and should be about three times the height of the stone.
Thinner stones are used in the garden, so that the depth here is 15 to 20 centimeters. For driveways and parking spaces, 20 to 30 centimeters are ideal.
The ground must be compacted so that it does not sag due to later loading. Curb stones, which stand on a concrete foundation, serve as a border for the area.
substructure
Fill in the area with 16/32 grit gravel. After compaction, the distance between the surface of the ballast and the planned upper edge of the stones is around eleven centimetres. This value is used as a guide for stones that are eight centimeters high. This leaves three centimeters for the leveling layer.
transfer bed
This leveling layer comes directly onto the gravel and serves as drainage. Mix one part lava chippings with one part sand and the excavated topsoil and fill in the mixture. Compact this layer and smooth the surface. The stones are then laid at a distance of three millimeters from each other.
Fill gaps:
- Mix topsoil, sand and clay granules
- Distribute the substrate over the surface
- sweep into the combs with a broom
- Tamp down the soil until each cell is three-quarters full
- Fill gaps up to the top edge of the stone and water the substrate
tips
Cut a piece of chipboard so that it fits exactly into the honeycomb. A square piece of wood, which is screwed tight in the middle, is used to guide the homemade rammer.
prepare the surface
Secure the surface by treating it with a vibrating plate (€499.00). In the coming weeks the substrate will settle, so the combs may need to be refilled with topsoil. Some flowering plants do not thrive well under continuous foot traffic. Wood sorrel, stonecrop or thyme prefer a lower position. Leave some space between the surface of the earth and the top of the stone. If you want to green the lawn pavers with grass, you should get special parking lot grass.
filler stones
There are special concrete blocks with which the ten by ten centimeter honeycombs can be precisely filled. In this way you get a closed concrete surface that is suitable for driving on. However, the aesthetics leave a lot to be desired and rainwater cannot drain off well.
