Naked oats are perfect for growing oat sprouts. These taste aromatically nutty and have many times more nutrients than the seeds. Dried, oat germs are a power ingredient for morning muesli.

The water of the seedlings should be changed twice a day

From grain to sprout

Put about 100 grams of naked oats in a sprouting jar and pour the grains with fresh, lukewarm tap water. Swirl the glass to loosen dirt and dust and use the strainer lid to pour off the rinse water. Fill the glass with three times the amount of water and wrap it in a kitchen towel. Under these dark conditions, the grains swell for at least eight hours.

stimulate germination

After the swelling time, pour off the cloudy liquid. Rinse the seeds again and then place the closed jar on the holder so that the opening is slanted downwards. The naked oat seeds benefit from good ventilation and moisture can drain off. In a bright place and with two daily rinses, the grains will germinate after about three days.

tips

You don't have to throw away the greenish broth that you get after soaking. It is suitable as fertilizer for flowers.

Short style portrait

The naked oat (Avena nuda) is a type of grain within the oat genus. Its German name comes from the fact that the husk falls off completely during threshing. Compared to other types of oats, this type has a higher content of bitter substances and is richer in fat. This makes the seeds more valuable from a nutritional point of view and suitable for whole food nutrition. However, naked oats are rarely grown and are often only available in health food stores and organic markets.

That’s why spelled oats are grown more often:

  • brings higher yields
  • is less susceptible to fungal diseases
  • Grains are firmly attached to the husks, which means they are better protected

Germination success of spelled and naked oats

Spelled oats are pre-treated. The grains undergo a heat treatment at temperatures between 80 and 90 degrees so that the husks can be separated more easily. In this process, not only the outer layers but also the fat-rich core are injured. Such seeds are no longer germinable. Naked oats do not require exposure to temperature, so that the ability to germinate is preserved.
