In March, the garden awakens from hibernation and you can finally pursue your favorite hobby again. As soon as the spring flowers open their flower heads, you can start gardening. With this article we would like to support you in “spring cleaning in the countryside”.

Bring garden tools into shape
The garden tools sat in the dark shed all winter, were not used and therefore received little attention. Before you get to work in the spring, you should check spades, digging forks, lawn mowers and edge cutters and repair any defects that have not already happened in autumn.
- Remove rust from tools and blades. This can be solved with a vinegar-oil mixture or a paste made from baking soda. Let the home remedies work for a few hours and wipe off the patina.
- Replace rotten handles, as these involve a risk of injury that should not be underestimated.
- Have the spade and lawnmower blades sharpen blunt edges.
Remove leaves and dead plant parts
The devices are ready for use? Then you should first clear lawns and beds of fallen leaves and plant debris. As a result, they do not begin to rot and decompose, which can lead to acidification of the soil.
All dead plant parts are also fished out of the garden pond with a landing net.
scarify the lawn
If the temperatures rise, you should pay a little more attention to the lawn. With a scarifier (€84.00) you remove old thatch from the turf and the soil is aerated. As a result, the green sprout vigorously and densely. Then treat the green areas to a little lawn fertilizer so that the necessary nutrients are available.
digging up beds
So that the soil organisms can work undisturbed during the winter, beds often remain untouched in autumn. March is the time to prepare them for the new gardening season by loosening them up. On this occasion, also bring a layer of compost into the soil, which ensures a good supply of nutrients to the plants.
Trim hedges and shrubs
Almost all hedges will grow denser and more evenly if they are trimmed back to the desired height and width in spring. In June, only a slight corrective cut is then necessary, which protects the animals living in the green enclosure.
Flowering shrubs such as summer lilac or hibiscus are pruned about every two to three years. Cut back any shoots that have budded in the previous year just above ground level. This promotes strong new growth.
tips
Flowering hedges are only pruned when they have completely faded so as not to reduce the blooming splendor. So enjoy the bright flowers first and then grab the scissors.
