Oats are healthy, but their seedlings are rich in vitamins and minerals. Good preparation is important for the grains to rise successfully. With a sprouting jar and a towel, you have two options that work differently.

Germinating oats is not difficult

What is naked oat?

Oats are a husk cereal in which the grain is firmly attached to a lemma and palea. Before you can roast these grains as oat flakes, they are dehusked. It is unavoidable that the germinable part of the grain is lost. There are special breeds without husks called naked oats. They do not have to be dehusked and retain their ability to germinate.

Utensils needed

In drugstores, health food stores and health food stores, there are special sprouting jars for sprouting grain for a few euros. These consist of a glass jar onto which a plastic lid fitted with a sieve is screwed. After filling with grains and water, the glass can be set up with a holder in such a way that the upper part is at a 45-degree angle to the table surface. The excess tap water drips off better and does not collect on the bottom of the container.

germinate seeds

Oats are proving to be a difficult candidate for germination because they are sensitive to the smallest amounts of moisture. Sufficient ventilation is necessary in the germination jar, so you should start with a smaller amount of grains. Germination is better on a damp cloth.

seed jar

Place 1 teaspoon of naked oats in a sprouting jar, being careful to discard any damaged or broken grains. Fill the glass with water and swirl the jar to loosen dirt. Use the sieve to pour off the rinsing water. After this preparation, germinate the oats as follows:

  • Pour three parts water to one part grains
  • leave to soak for five hours in a place with an air temperature of 20 degrees
  • Drain liquid and rinse seeds again
  • Place the germination jar on the holder so that excess moisture runs off
  • rinse twice a day with tap water
  • Swirl jar daily to aerate oat seed

In a bright and warm place, the first sprouts will appear after about two to three days. These can be kept in the fridge with the sprouting jar, where they will keep for about three days.

tips

If you break the glass, you can continue to use the sieve lid. This fits on conventional pickle jars from the supermarket.

cloth

Place a dampened towel on a grid and sprinkle a thin layer of naked oats on one side. Cover the grains with the other half of the cloth. Spray the fabric with a little water every day and air regularly to prevent mold growth. After three days, the first green sprouts appear.
