With a special plant fleece, the growth of unwanted weeds on beds and borders can be permanently prevented. This saves you a lot of work in the ornamental and vegetable garden, but only if you have chosen the right weed control fabric. Read our guide to find out what a plant fleece actually is and which criteria are decisive for the purchase.

The high-quality plant fleece from the manufacturer GardenMate is characterized by its robustness and high durability: the material is rot-proof, tear-resistant and resistant to UV light and weather influences such as frost and heat. At the same time, it allows your plants to breathe and is permeable to essential things like water and nutrients. Its mode of action is based on the fact that it blocks sunlight and therefore prevents weeds from growing in the first place. With your order you will receive a one meter wide roll with a 50 meter long weed fleece. (21.70€) P. S. The material is not suitable as a root barrier (e.g. when planting bamboo or other species that form runners).

Xabian anti weed fleece 150g/m² garden fleece roll 50m x 1m = 50m² I weed film very high UV stabilization - extremely tear-resistant and water-permeable
69.97 EUR To the product
Size (length x width) 15 x 2 meters
Enough for 50 m²
Price/m² approx. EUR {PRICE/50}
grammage 150gsm
water permeability water permeable
UV resistance UV-resistant
tear strength tear resistant
particularities frost and hail resistant

The special feature of this product is the high grammage of 150 grams per square meter, which means that the thick plant fleece achieves a particularly high tear resistance. It is also weather-resistant, since rain, moisture, frost or even hail do not affect the material (high-quality polypropylene). The floor fleece is also resistant to UV rays. You only have to make compromises in terms of breathability and water permeability, which is not due to the quality but to the thickness of the fleece. Incidentally, you can also use it as a separating or drainage fleece, as a base for the sandbox or for the raised bed.

water permeability water permeable
UV resistance UV-resistant
tear strength tear resistant
particularities high UV stabilization

This 0.29 millimeter thick garden fleece, which is very robust and tear-resistant at 150 grams per square meter, stores both heat and water, allows moisture, liquid fertiliser, light and air to pass through, so that your ornamental and useful plants have everything they need for healthy growth . Only weeds are prevented from thriving, and UV light is also stabilized by around ten percent. This makes the plant fleece a long-lasting and ecological method of effectively keeping unwanted vegetation out of beds and borders - and thus saving you a lot of work at the same time

Purchase Criteria

scope of application

A plant fleece can be used for both vegetable and ornamental gardens. In the kitchen garden, this not only has the effect of preventing the growth of weeds, it also warms the soil, stores water and thus contributes to better growth of vegetables and strawberries. Here you should use a weed fleece made of biodegradable materials if possible, as it only remains in the soil for a few weeks or months. On the other hand, for the ornamental garden, where the plants remain in the same place for many years, a rot-proof product is recommended.

material

As a rule, plant fleece consists of synthetic, i. H. man-made materials. These do not rot, which can become a problem in the vegetable patch - after all, you would have to dig up and re-bury the fleece every time you change crops, or dispose of it every time, which in turn creates a lot of waste. It therefore makes sense to use a garden fleece made of biodegradable materials in the kitchen garden. Over time, these rot without leaving any residue and also provide a few nutrients for the plants. However, degradable nonwovens are rare and hard to come by as most manufacturers rely on plastics.

grammage

The material thickness of a plant fleece is given in grams per square meter and expresses how thick the fabric is. Grammages - the technical term - between 50 and 200 grams per square meter are available for garden fleece, whereby a thickness of between 50 and 90 grams per square meter is completely sufficient for an ordinary vegetable or ornamental bed - unless you have stubborn root weeds such as goutweed prevent growth. The thicker a fleece is, the poorer its water and air permeability, which in turn is noticeable in plant growth.

water permeability

If you still want or need to lay a thick fleece in the bed, you should use a so-called hydro fleece. This plant fleece is thick and hard-wearing, but has a much higher water permeability than conventional garden fleece made from normal textiles. Water the freshly laid fleece continuously to improve its permeability. You should also lay a drainage layer to effectively prevent waterlogging. A layer of coarse gravel or pebbles under the fleece is suitable for this. Heavy soil should also be thoroughly loosened.

UV resistance

Another important purchase criterion is UV resistance. This is important because many materials are very sensitive to UV radiation and become brittle and porous over time - with the result that they can no longer effectively fulfill their task of preventing weeds from growing. In addition, plant fleece should be permeable to air and water, but not translucent, which is why many of these fabrics are black in color. A lack of light also prevents weeds from germinating and growing.

quality and robustness

Properly laid, a good plant fleece can do its job in the garden bed for up to 25 years. In order for it to actually last that long and not decompose beforehand, nonwovens made of polypropylene in particular should have been treated with UV inhibitors. It has also proven helpful to apply a layer of mulch (e.g. bark mulch or gravel) at least five centimeters thick after laying the fleece and creating the bed. This also increases the lifespan of the material as less sunlight penetrates.

frequently asked Questions

What is a plant fleece?

A plant fleece is laid directly into the garden soil and is intended to prevent the growth of unwanted weeds. To ensure that ornamental and useful plants can still thrive, cross-shaped planting slits are cut into the fabric. Another advantage is that these fabrics, also known as weed fleece or garden fleece, keep the ground warm and store water.

How does a plant fleece work?

Plant fleece consists of a special fabric, which is usually dark in color. As a result, the material is not only hardly noticeable in the garden bed, but above all prevents the sun's rays from penetrating the soil and causing weed seeds to germinate. After all, where there is no light, weeds do not grow. In addition, the fabric should be so thick that even stubborn root weeds - if they do reach the surface - cannot penetrate the material.

What types of plant fleece are there?

Plant fleece is often confused with plant film. Although the latter is also often used to prevent weeds from growing, both products are made of different materials and have different thicknesses. Due to its greater material thickness, non-woven fabric has the advantage over film, as weeds can more easily penetrate the thin film. Otherwise, the various fleeces differ mainly in terms of their grammage, i. H. in their material thickness.

What can plant fleece be used for?

You can lay plant fleece not only in beds and borders, but also as a base for gravel and flagstone paths, for terraces, sandpits, raised beds and other structures. For this, however, it makes sense to use the strongest possible materials of at least 150 grams per square meter, after all, they also have to be sturdy. Therefore, choose products that are labeled as "garden fleece" or "soil fleece".

What should be considered when laying the plant fleece?

Plant fleece is available in rolls of one or two meters wide and can be cut to size as required. However, make sure that you lay the fleece overlapping and not edge to edge. Otherwise, weeds could still force their way through the resulting gaps. In addition, the fleece should lie on the ground and only be covered with a layer of mulch material.
