Without water, flowers begin to wither and die. That's why you need to water your green roommates regularly. However, this requires a sure instinct, because the plants die far more often than from insufficient watering because their feet are permanently wet.

If the soil feels dry, you should water the flowers

Estimate the water needs

  • Indoor flowers such as the Flaming Katy, a succulent plant, have completely different water needs than, for example, the popular hard-working Lieschen.
  • Plants with large leaves that evaporate a lot of moisture need more frequent watering than those with little foliage.
  • In a warm, very bright location, the same flower needs more water than in a cool, shady one.
  • Flowers do not bloom all year round. If they start buds and have plenty of flowers, you have to water them more often than during the dormant phase.

When and how should it be watered?

As a rule of thumb, water whenever the top layer of the substrate feels dry (thumb test). Pour flowers with sensitive roots over the saucer. These include, for example, cyclamen and African violets. For all other plants, pour the water over the potting soil in a fine stream.

Orchids are an exception. This one gets better when sprayed or doused with a floral shower.

Almost all flowers do not tolerate waterlogging very well. The root system begins to rot and the important life veins can no longer supply the plant. You should therefore throw away excess water that collects in the cachepot after ten minutes.

Water garden flowers properly

In an attractively landscaped garden, colorful flowers appear from the time the snow melts until autumn, and they should be watered regularly. The following principles apply to these:

  • Water in the morning or evening if possible.
  • During hot spells it may need to be watered twice a day.
  • Give water directly to the roots.
  • Thoroughly water rooted plants at longer intervals.

tips

When watering houseplants, always use room-warm water that you leave in the pot for a few hours. Many flowers are sensitive to high lime content. For these, the use of soft rainwater is recommended.
