Flowers in the garden and on the balcony are often frost-resistant and can remain outdoors without any problems, provided that a certain amount of winter protection is applied. Unfortunately, many balcony flowers are not winterproof. However, these do not have to be disposed of at the beginning of the cold season, because you can overwinter them in the house.

Continue caring for balcony plants in the house
By overwintering the flowers, you can save a lot of money for new purchases next year. There are a few basic rules to keep in mind:
- Plants that shed their leaves are placed in a dark, frost-free but cool room.
- Evergreen flowers get a light location, for example a window in the stairwell.
- If there is enough space, balcony flowers can remain in the box. Alternatively, you can remove a few specimens from the planter, cut them back, free them from the soil and overwinter in boxes.
- You can pot geraniums, put the root ball in a bag and hang the flowers upside down in a place that is not too warm.
Protect hardy flowers
Frost-hardy flowering plants such as hydrangea, roses or sedum can also remain outdoors in winter. To protect them from severe frost, they are covered from above with straw mats, pine greens or leaves.
Plant hardy flowers cultivated in planters on wooden slats. This way the roots cannot freeze to death on the cold floor covering of your patio.
In very rough locations, it is also advisable to insulate balcony boxes (€109.00) and tubs from the outside. Suitable for this:
- bubble wrap,
- old jute sacks,
- garden fleece.
tips
If you would like to enjoy the garden, balcony and terrace in winter, you can decorate the protection against the cold. For example, tie thick cords around the protective jute layer and decorate them with a bit of pine green. In addition to the fir twigs you can put some evergreen branches in the ground and decorate them according to the season.
