Flowers are often not just a gift, but the flowers stand for emotions that you would like to remember for a long time. Unfortunately, the shelf life of fresh plants is limited. However, there are some ways to dry these and thereby preserve memories.

Flowers are best dried upside down

Place in glycerin

In this way, whole bouquets can be dehydrated. Glycerin is a sugar alcohol that binds liquids. The remedy is available in pharmacies and drugstores.

The method:

  • Mix one part glycerin with two parts lukewarm water and pour into the vase.
  • Cut the stems fresh and strip off the leaves that would be dipped in the liquid.
  • put flowers inside.
  • These now absorb the water-glycerin mixture and dry within a few days.

The method also works well for buds without a stem. In this case, pour the glycerin-water mixture into a jar and place a single flower in it. Drying is complete as soon as no more droplets come out of the petals.

Silicia in powder form or special dry salt

With this procedure, the colors of the flowers are beautifully preserved. However, flowers that you want to dry in this way must not be too damp, as the salts only absorb liquid to a limited extent.

  • Pour some desiccant into a tight-fitting container and place the flower inside.
  • Cover completely with drying salt.
  • Seal and leave in a warm place for at least two weeks.
  • Take out the flowers and shake off any salt that has stuck to them.

Air drying

This is probably the best-known method of preserving flowers. It is equally suitable for bouquets and single flowers. These get a beautiful, morbid character.

  • Tie the flowers tightly together and hang them upside down.
  • A dark, airy room is ideal.
  • The plants are completely dry when they rustle slightly when touched.
  • Finally, you can protect the flowers with clear varnish or hairspray.

Cover flowers with a layer of wax

In this way, individual flowers can be preserved over the long term. Old leftover candles or craft wax are suitable for the coating. Beautiful effects can be achieved with colored wax.

  • Melt the wax in a water bath.
  • Check the temperature with a thermometer. This should not be hotter than 60 degrees.
  • Dunk flowers upside down.
  • Place in a vase to dry or lay on a newspaper.

tips

You can preserve individual flowers in the oven. Place the flowers on a baking sheet sprinkled with sand and dry them for several hours on the lowest level.
