Colorful onion flowers in pots bring spring magic into the home even in the winter months. Dwarf daffodils, lilies of the valley, hyacinths or tulips that have faded do not have to be thrown away with organic waste, they can be reused. Plant them outdoors, drive them again and again and form dense carpets of flowers over the years.

Flower bulbs can be kept indoors and planted out in spring

Continue caring for faded onion plants

The faded plants need a long dormant phase until next spring, but then they sprout reliably and usually even more vigorously than last year.

  • Cut out faded inflorescences immediately, even if only the leaves remain. This allows the onion to store nutrients.
  • Green foliage is not shortened.
  • Water moderately but regularly. The substrate should not dry out completely.
  • Fertilize the potted bulbs every 14 days with half the amount printed on the packaging of a conventional flowering fertilizer.

Plant spring flowers

As soon as there are no longer any fears of heavy late frosts, the onion flowers will find a new home in the garden. When planting, you should proceed as follows:

  • First place the pots in the fresh air for a few days so that the plants can acclimate. This is particularly important if not all the leaves have died.
  • If the temperatures drop unexpectedly, you should put the pots in a sheltered place, for example in the basement.
  • Before planting, remove all withered plant parts and withered leaves.
  • Repot carefully so that as few roots as possible are lost.
  • The planting hole should be a little deeper than with dry onions, so that all the roots have enough space. As a result, the already faded plants grow better.
  • Cover the onions evenly with substrate, pressing down well.
  • Finally, water the plants.

tips

If you don't have a garden of your own, you can store the cleaned and dried onion in a cool, dark place until next year. Place them back in conventional potting soil and place the planter in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator for about two months to simulate winter. Then the onion flowers are allowed to move to the bright window. If you keep the substrate evenly moist, the first leaves and flowers will appear after about ten days.
