Do you only have a small garden and are you afraid that a green fence would restrict the space in your property? In the following article we will show you that this is not the case. Among other things, we will introduce you to hedge plants that do not grow too quickly in height or width.

In a small garden, high hedges are very bulky and narrow

Conifers, also for small gardens

Many types of conifers are not suitable for towel gardens, as thujas can grow very large and then take up far too much space. What is little known is that there are variants of these popular trees that do exceptionally well in limited spaces. False cypresses, for example, grow elegantly and narrowly in height. However, like the yew trees, which are also suitable for small gardens, they should be cut at least twice a year.

Slow growing hedge plants

  • Oleaster: This old, evergreen cultivated plant impresses with its delicate leaves. Not only do they thrive well in coastal gardens. Robust, windproof and undemanding, they also form pretty, green enclosures in other regions.
  • Holly: This is similar to the box tree due to the small, deep green foliage. Very frost hardy, it even grows in rough, shady locations.
  • Portuguese cherry laurel: This remains narrower than other members of the genus. Growing up to three meters high, it nevertheless provides sufficient privacy protection.
  • Japanese maple: This maple grows slowly and reaches a maximum of 2.50 meters. Planted relatively close together, this plant creates a beautiful enclosure with extraordinarily attractive foliage.

Regular pruning

So that the hedge does not grow too much in small gardens, it should be trimmed at least twice a year. the uniform green of the topiary provides a pretty background for colorful flowerbeds that you can plant directly in front of the hedge to make the most of the limited space available.

Planting at eye level instead of a hedge for privacy protection

Especially in small gardens, a dense wall can increase a feeling of narrowness. If your property is adjacent to a beautifully landscaped neighboring garden or an undeveloped area, it is worth considering keeping the boundary low to ensure an unobstructed view. Dog roses, for example, are suitable for this, and they are regularly trimmed a little in shape. A green wall of tall shrubs and pretty grasses also looks airy and appealing.

tips

As an alternative to the hedge in a small garden, you can use a privacy fence that you green with Virginia creeper, ivy, climbing roses or clematis.
