The standard rule that can often be read is that hedges should always be planted in autumn. Depending on the root packaging, however, a different season can also be chosen. In the following article we would like to go into more detail about the best time to plant and give you valuable tips for setting the bushes.

The type of hedge is crucial
A hedge is a variety of bushes that are planted in a row to provide a dense privacy screen. Depending on the location of the garden, the spatial conditions and individual preferences, a wide variety of plants can be used.
Of importance for the time of planting is whether the shrubs are
- ball plants,
- container goods,
- or bare root plants
acts.
container plants
With these, the bush is in a planter with soil, which means that the root ball is well protected and gets into the ground intact. The plants are almost always grown in their pot, so they do not suffer any loss of root mass.
Therefore, a hedge made of container goods can be planted at any time of the year. Due to the complete root ball, this is possible even in summer, when high temperatures and sunshine cause problems for the plants.
Hedge plants with balls
These are dug out of the ground before they are transported to the garden center or right in front of you in the tree nursery. They grew up outdoors without a protective flower pot and are therefore relatively robust. Hedge plants with balls are planted during the vegetation dormancy, which lasts from September to May.
The period is significantly shorter for evergreen baled goods. You should plant these plants in September or October so that they take root before the winter months.
Think of the pruning. The shrubs that have lost roots when digging up compensate for this by sparingly supplying the upper parts of the plant. The pruning ensures that they sprout vigorously and healthily in the spring.
Bare root shrubs
These come out of the ground without protective soil. As a rule, only deciduous shrubs are offered bare-rooted. Since part of the root ball was lost during digging and transport, these bushes have fewer fine roots than plants that you bought in a container or at least with a root ball. In order for the hedge plants to grow well, it is important to plant bare-rooted plants only in the cold season, preferably in September or October.
tips
Regardless of which plants you choose, you should water the newly planted hedge regularly. In a hot summer, a newly planted hedge needs daily watering. As a rule of thumb, each plant should get at least 15 liters of water per watering session.
