Covered in wax, amaryllis are festively staged at Christmas. Creative indoor gardeners grow the exotic flower bulbs using the DIY method. This guide explains how to wax an amaryllis bulb and decorate for the winter.

A waxed amaryllis is a special eye-catcher

preparation and ingredients

When an amaryllis puts on its wax coat, budding has already begun. For this reason, plant a fresh amaryllis bulb with an upright tip in a mix of peat-free soil and a third of lava granules.(13.99€) In a dark, cool location, pour the knight's star in sips from below. After about 14 days, budding begins and the awakened onion moves to a bright, warm window seat. A little more patience and you can grow your amaryllis with these ingredients:

  • Amaryllis bulb with a hand's breadth high flower stalk
  • scissors
  • Wax (e.g. leftover candle wax)
  • Pot for melting wax
  • baking paper
  • crystal gel
  • Reflective beads or glitter
  • Decoration snow powder
  • paint brush

For a flowering period around Christmas, preparations begin in early November. Plant an amaryllis bulb at the beginning of October and the splendor of waxed flowers will beautify your home during Advent.

Growing and decorating amaryllis - step-by-step instructions

The following instructions explain step by step how to grow an amaryllis bulb yourself and decorate it nicely:

  1. Take the onion with the stem out of the soil and wash it off
  2. Cut roots back to short stubs with sharp, sanitized scissors
  3. Melt wax in saucepan (do not boil)
  4. Dip amaryllis bulbs in lukewarm wax to just below the base of the stem
  5. Repeat the dipping process until the wax layer is opaque
  6. Place the onion in the wax coating on the baking paper, allow to cool and dry
  7. Apply crystal gel to the wax layer with the brush as desired
  8. Sprinkle decorative snow powder, reflective beads or glitter onto the still wet gel

Amaryllis in wax bloom without a pot and care. You don't have to worry about proper watering or fertilizing. However, you can only enjoy the magnificent feast for the eyes for a short time. Under the layer of wax, a knight's star bulb wears itself out completely. You won't get the exhausted amaryllis to bloom a second time.

tips

Turn the pot regularly to keep amaryllis growing straight. The repeated rotations begin when the green shoot signals the start of growth. Ideally, rotate the planter 45 degrees every two to three days. The attention is rewarded with a straight growth of the flower shaft, on which the proud calyxes are enthroned.
