Sometimes a garden wall is only planned as a low, visual separation of individual areas. Over time, however, it turns out that the residents would like more intimacy. Then it makes sense to increase the privacy protection. In this guide article you will find out how you can implement this on your own, tailored to the masonry.

Placing a fence on the existing wall is a simple, quick option

concrete walls

These can be cemented relatively easily and with little effort. The prerequisite is that you have built a foundation that is at least 80 centimeters deep when erecting the wall, which provides the necessary stability.

  • Drill holes at the top of the wall and insert rebars.
  • Lay out formwork at the required height.
  • Pour in good quality concrete and allow to harden well.

erect the garden wall

If the privacy screen is bricked, you can also increase it. However, you must meet all the requirements for a stable structure and may need official approval. In order to achieve a uniform image, the walling should be done with the materials of the original wall.

To build a wall, brick by brick is laid in mortar. To do this, the top of the wall must first be removed.

  • Before inserting, coat each stone from the front and back with mortar.
  • After setting each layer, check the horizontal and vertical alignment with a spirit level, a plumb line and a straightedge.
  • After the last row of bricks has been laid, let it dry thoroughly.
  • At the end is a wall crown that prevents water from penetrating from above.

You can then plaster and repaint the wall.

alternative options

If you are not quite as handy with your hands, there are other options for increasing the privacy screen. For example, you can use a garden wall that is not too high as the basis for a fence. If you plant the small structure, the plants ensure that a dense, green privacy screen and thus the desired intimacy is created.

tips

The neighborhood law of the federal state states which wall height is permissible at your place of residence. However, each municipality has the right to issue its own regulations. Therefore, it makes sense to get all the necessary information from the local building authority before you start building.
