Many plant lovers and garden owners do not always want to just buy new plants, but prefer to breed or propagate them themselves. This is not always easy to do. However, Chinese reed (bot. Miscanthus sinensis) is easy to propagate.

The easiest way to propagate Miscanthus is by division

What is the best way to propagate Chinese reed?

The easiest way to multiply Chinese reed is by division. Either you share your own plants or you ask neighbors or relatives if they give you parts of their Chinese reeds. Spring is a good time to divide when you're pruning as well.

You don't necessarily have to dig up the entire root ball of your Chinese reed. It is sufficient if you partially expose the bale. Then divide it with a sharp spade. If your Chinese reed is big enough, you can also cut off several sections at the same time. However, each separated section should have at least three or four shoots.

Plant sections

Immediately replant the cut sections. Look for a sunny location where the new Chinese reed has enough space. Put some fertilizer in the planting hole, preferably some mature compost. After planting, water the Chinese reed well. Regular watering is also advisable for the next few weeks.

Grow Chinese reed from seed

Chinese reed can also be grown from seeds. You can get these in gardening shops or online. Keep the seed pressed on moist growing substrate not to dry out during the germination period. At a cultivation temperature of around 20 °C to 25 °C, the first seedlings should appear after two to three weeks.

The essentials in brief:

  • simplest way of propagation: division
  • ideal time for dividing: spring, when pruning
  • Water divided plants well
  • Repot cultivated in the tub when dividing
  • Sowing possible with purchased seeds
  • Growing temperature: 20°C to 25°C
  • Germination time: approx. 2 to 3 weeks
  • Cover seeds with foil, air briefly about every 2 days

tips

If you would like to share Chinese reed cultivated in a bucket, then use this opportunity to repot the mother plant right away.
