The hard-working Lizzie (Impatiens walleriana), which originates from Africa and is now mostly cultivated as an annual in Europe, flowers continuously from May to autumn. This makes the so-called balsam, with its abundance of different varieties and flower colors, an ideal plant for a balcony.

The diligent Lieschen is an enrichment for every balcony

The location needs of the industrious Lizzie

The hard-working Lizzie gets along well with brightness, but does not tolerate the midday heat of summer in direct sunlight. Conversely, the hard-working Lieschen also flowers very reliably in partially shaded to shady locations. The plant has a high water requirement and should never dry out completely in the root area. However, the hard-working Lizzie does not like waterlogging, which is why a drainage layer should be created in the planters. Ordinary potting soil is well suited as a plant substrate, and when propagating from cuttings, a simple glass of water is sufficient for the first few weeks.

Plant the busy Lizzie on the balcony

Since the hard-working Lieschen is extremely sensitive to frost and relatively cold, it should be planted on the balcony after the ice saints at average temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius and above. Since the busy Lizzie is non-toxic, it can also be planted on balconies where children and pets have access. Balconies that are not directly south-facing and on which the plants are protected from wind and rain by a roof or side walls are ideal as a location. During the flowering period in summer, the plants, which require a lot of water, should be watered daily if possible and fertilized with a little liquid fertilizer about every two weeks.

Suitable neighbors for the hard-working Lizzie on the balcony

The pretty flowers of the hard-working Lieschen look particularly attractive on the balcony when they are placed in contrast to other balcony plants. Due to the location requirements, the following plant species are particularly suitable for a combination with the hard-working Lieschen in the balcony box:

  • geraniums
  • petunias
  • lobelia

In addition, there are different types of hard-working Lizzie within the genus Impatiens with quite varied flower colors and shapes. Please note that the double-flowering varieties of the hard-working Lizzie can often only be propagated by cuttings.

tips

While some balcony plants only thrive in tall plant pots, other laws apply to the hard-working Lizzie. This usually blooms particularly lavishly when the roots are in a rather narrow plant pot.
