Walls made of sand-lime brick are relatively easy to build and are therefore very popular. In addition, the material is extremely cheap to manufacture, which is reflected in the price. This variant is an excellent choice, especially if the garden wall is to offer good sound insulation.

Sandstone is a very popular material

What is sand-lime brick?

Sand-lime brick is made from burnt lime and quartz sand (€15.85). Both materials are mixed in a ratio of 1:12 and mixed with water. This leads to a chemical reaction that makes it possible to form stones from the mortar mass. These are hardened under pressure at temperatures of up to 200 degrees.

The foundation

A foundation represents the stable base for the sand-lime brick wall, because it ensures that no water can rise from the subsoil into the wall. The excavation required for this should be at least 80 centimeters deep and provided with formwork.

A layer of gravel or crushed stone is filled into the pit and compacted well. Finally, fill in the concrete evenly and compact it as well. After drying, you can scorch an additional bitumen membrane.

execution

First, the sand-lime bricks are watered. This ensures that the stone does not pull all of the moisture out of the mortar, which would cause the material to set too quickly.

Proceed as follows when bricking:

  • Tension the guide line (7.13€).
  • Mix mortar according to directions and apply a layer two to three centimeters thick.
  • Place the first and last stone of the wall and align using a spirit level and a long lath.
  • Use the guidelines as a guide and use all sand-lime bricks.
  • When doing this, make sure to work with full joints, i.e. every joint between the stones is filled with mortar.
  • In the second row, the stones are each offset by half a length.

tips

Before erecting the wall, you should find out the government regulations regarding the permitted height, location and material. You can get information about this from the municipality, where you can also apply for a building permit.
