A weathered wall can certainly exude a certain charm. Most of the time, however, the aging walls tend to spoil the well-kept overall impression. You can breathe new life into a garden wall made of concrete or wood with the right colors and thus coordinate it visually with the design of the garden. You can find out what is important in this makeover in the following article.

tool list
- high pressure cleaner
- wire brush
- rag
- 150 grit sandpaper
- tarpaulin or awning
- paint roller
- paint brush
- scraper grid
- if you want to mix the colors, an extra bucket of paint
material list
- Primer and color matched to the material
The preparation
Only dry, dirt-free masonry leads to a beautiful result. Discoloration and moss can be easily removed with the high-pressure cleaner (€119.90). Alternatively, a hard brush and some soapy water are suitable for cleaning the wall. Get rid of loose paint residue with a wire brush. Then lightly sand the surface with coarse emery paper.
Check wall for damage
The plaster often crumbles in individual areas. These damaged areas must be touched up before painting. Now let the wall dry for a few days so that the paint adheres reliably.
protect workplace
If the wall is near large trees, you should protect the work surface from dirt with an awning or a plastic tarpaulin.
Priming ensures better durability of the color
This important step is often forgotten. You can only ensure that the coat of paint adheres well and does not peel off again within a very short time by using a primer that is tailored to the substrate. Get advice from a specialist retailer and match the basic color to the wood or masonry.
Since both the primer and the subsequent coat of paint have to dry thoroughly, you should keep an eye on the weather forecast for this work and choose a few rain-free days.
The paint
Now it's finally time to paint the wall. Stir the paint according to the manufacturer's instructions and paint the surface quickly and evenly from top to bottom. At least three not too thick coats are recommended.
tips
If you want to paint the wall colorfully and display it in the public area, a permit may be required. Unfortunately, it is often the case that the redesign must not change the streetscape. You should therefore inquire in advance with the responsible municipality about the regulations that apply in your area.
