Walls serve as a classic privacy screen in the garden and optically divide the green area into different areas. Even without a bricklayer, you can professionally build them yourself, for example by using concrete blocks. You can find out how to concrete the foundation and properly raise the small structure in the following article.

Build the base
In order for the wall to be stable, the foundation should be concreted. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Dig the foundation trench about 80 centimeters deep and a little wider than the future wall should be.
- Build formwork from wooden slats and wedge them over the trench.
- Backfill the bottom of the pit with gravel that is well compacted.
- If necessary, provide reinforcement with pegs and reinforcement (iron mat).
- Apply formwork oil, otherwise the formwork will stick.
- Mix concrete from one part Portland cement and five parts gravel sand until thick.
- Do a liquid test: place a blob of the material on a board and tap it with a hammer. The concrete must not flow.
- Backfill the trench and the overhanging formwork and compact the concrete with a wooden rammer.
- Let dry.
build a concrete wall
With modern concrete blocks that look like natural stone, you can easily build a wall. This is done using the thin-bed method with a thin layer of mortar, which makes work much easier for inexperienced bricklayers.
tool list
- metal hammer
- chisel
- trowel
- hinge iron
- Hand Brush
- pavement cracker
- Angle grinder with diamond cutting disc
You can rent the devices inexpensively in many hardware stores and you do not have to buy them yourself.
The first row of stones is placed on the hardened concrete:
- Tension a guideline (7.13€) which specifies the height and the course.
- Thin-bed adhesive, which is not applied thicker than half a centimetre, results in a tight, clean joint pattern.
- Stack the stones in layers, always checking the plumb and alignment. Careful work pays off.
- In the case of long walls, additional pillars ensure stability.
- The new garden wall will be covered with head plates made of the same concrete material. These protect the joints from rain.
tips
Concrete block manufacturers offer special wall systems. Thanks to the modular principle, they can also be used by amateurs to erect very attractive garden walls that can hardly be distinguished visually from natural stone walls.
