- The right substructure
- The foundation for the drywall
- Lay the strip foundation
- Special case terracing or raised bed
The garden wall can serve to demarcate the property and at the same time provide privacy. If it stands where there is a gradient, it stabilizes the slope. Depending on the material, walls also fulfill ecological purposes, because they are the habitat for many living beings. What all variants have in common, however, is that they need the right foundation.

The right substructure
If the garden wall is only to be around half a meter high and to structure the garden, a layer of gravel that is not too thin is sufficient for a stable stand. For higher walls you need to concrete:
- First mark the planned route with wooden stakes and a guide line.(7.13€)
- The trench you are now digging should be eight inches wider than the wall.
- In the case of free-standing structures, this also applies to the ends.
- For good stability and frost protection, dig at least eighty centimeters deep.
- Use materials that are not susceptible to frost damage.
The foundation for the drywall
You can create this without concrete. It does not have to be dug quite as deep as for the strip foundation. Depending on the height of the structure, forty centimeters are sufficient.
It is important to carefully compact the 30 to 35 centimeter thick layer of crushed stone or gravel with a vibrating plate (€499.00). This material has a capillary-breaking effect, because freezing water can expand unhindered without jeopardizing stability. The gravel is filled with a ten centimeter thick layer of construction sand.
Lay the strip foundation
In the case of free-standing walls, 60 percent frost-proof gravel is first poured into the ditch. Always compact the material well. Then fill the pit with concrete. If you are planning a high wall that requires a lot of stability, steel reinforcement should also be inserted. Depending on the length of the wall, expansion joints in the foundation are also recommended.
Special case terracing or raised bed
If the dry stone wall on a slope is later to be filled with earth from the inside, it is important that the base of the foundation slopes slightly outwards. Transverse drainage pipes are recommended for good water drainage.
tips
Garden walls are considered a structure and are subject to approval, depending on the state building code of your federal state. You should therefore inquire in advance with the competent authority. If the wall is in the neighbour's field of vision, it is also advisable to obtain his consent beforehand and coordinate the optics with him.
