Water is essential to the life of ornamental and crop plants. If you water properly, the plants form strong roots and are thus better supplied with nutrients. It is not only important that you water sufficiently, the procedure also affects the health of the plants.

Automatic drip irrigation saves time and water

Why does it have to be balanced?

For flowers to bloom profusely and vegetables to remain healthy, they need to be watered regularly. If they are too wet, fungi and viruses have an easy time and there is a risk of root rot. On the other hand, if the plants are too dry, they react by shedding their leaves and the plants become susceptible to pest infestation and diseases promoted by drought.

How is it poured?

In order to save water, the right watering is not only important in hot summers:

  • If you water at the bottom, the liquid goes directly to the root area. In addition, less of the precious liquid evaporates.
  • Do not water over the plants. Sensitive plants such as kohlrabi or tomatoes could burst open. There is also a risk of sunburn, because the water droplets act like magnifying glasses when exposed to sunlight.
  • Water preferably in the morning, this keeps snails and fungus away.

Rainwater: lime-free and free

Even if watering with a hose is less of a hassle, you should use rainwater whenever possible. It has the ideal pH and is free. In the garden you can collect it in a water butt fed from the rainwater downpipe.

Automatic irrigation systems: saves time and water

The system of these irrigation systems is very simple: A pressure reducer is connected to the water tap or a cistern with a pump. From here, small hoses with drippers or sprayers lead directly to the plants. These can be laid individually and adapted to the garden design using connecting pieces. Depending on the version, the amount of water escaping from the openings can even be regulated individually.

Irrigation computers installed between the tap and the supply line are particularly convenient, as they automatically control when and how much water flows. A sensor measures the moisture in the soil and uses an irrigation timer to control the watering time.

tips

Please make sure that the rain barrel does not become a trap for insects and small creatures. Cover the jar or at least put a large branch inside that will provide a safe exit for crawlies. In addition, the vessel should be covered childproof.
