No one can be sure that their splendidly growing Nordmann fir will not suffer from an illness one day. As with us humans, healing can only be promoted with this coniferous tree after the correct diagnosis. Therefore, a close look is essential.

Dangerous for the Nordmann fir, edible for us: honey fungus

Discolored needles and needle loss

If a once lush green fir tree changes color or even loses its needles, everyone will immediately suspect a disease behind it. But care mistakes and unfavorable living conditions are more responsible. For example:

  • drought in summer
  • drought in winter
  • nutrient deficiency
  • compacted soil

Pests can also cause different discolorations on the needles. Do your research so you can take appropriate steps.

Fungal diseases on the Nordmann fir

No fungi are specialized in this type of fir. But the honey fungus is not choosy and also spreads to the Nordmann fir. By the time we see its fruiting bodies, it's already too late, because the fungus has been working in secret for a long time. The fir must be cleared and removed from the garden to prevent this fungus from spreading to other trees.

Honey fungus usually affects weakened trees. Here is the chance to protect a fir from infestation. Only plant young fir trees in suitable locations and give them the care they need.

tips

Honey fungus, which is so dangerous for trees, is an edible fungus that also tastes good. However, it may only be enjoyed heated, as it is poisonous when raw.

fir rust

Fir rust rarely endangers an otherwise healthy, mature Nordmann fir; young trees are more likely to suffer. A visible feature of this disease, albeit only at second glance, are the white, pin-shaped spore beds on the underside of the needles. When ripe, they turn yellow to orange.

The pathogen needs an intermediate host for hibernation, usually a fireweed or a fuchsia. If the intermediate host is found and removed from the garden, new infections will no longer occur. This procedure is more environmentally friendly than using a fungicide, especially since the disease would have to be fought anew every year. In the long run, the poison is not only harmful, but also expensive.
