If the flower bed is rather shady, cool and damp, moss spreads quickly. You can let this grow - it won't harm the plants - or remove it with a small hoe. You can try our tips to prevent the moss carpet from spreading further or disappearing again.

causes
Moss in the flower bed has one main reason: It finds ideal growth conditions and therefore spreads unabashedly. Especially in shady and rather moist soil flower beds are best suited for moss colonization. Compacted soils that tend to be acidic are also ideal breeding grounds. However, the main reason is lack of sun.
countermeasures
In principle, you will not be able to change the site conditions, because you will not be able to produce full sun in a shady bed - especially since the plants, which are certainly adapted to the lack of light, will be more resentful of moving them. However, you are not completely helpless when it comes to eliminating the cause, because you can improve compacted, damp soil with simple means and thus make it unattractive for moss.
drainage
This includes, for example, draining the soil sustainably by subsequently installing a drainage system. To do this, dig drainage ditches into which water pipes are laid - these should have a slight incline so that the water can drain freely from the bed to a lower location.
Loosen / aerate the soil
Another important cause of mossy flower beds is soil that is too dense, which you can carefully aerate with a digging fork (professionals call this process scarifying). To do this, poke the tines of the device regularly into the bed at small intervals and wiggle them back and forth a little. However, be careful not to damage any roots. In addition, the surface of the soil can be loosened, for example with the help of a hoe.
fertilizing / liming
Moss prefers rather acidic and nutrient-poor soil. You can therefore effectively combat the green carpet with garden lime (€9.70), which you should preferably apply directly to the previously loosened soil in the spring. But be careful: not all perennials and shrubs tolerate lime! Regular fertilization, for example by applying compost and horn shavings (€32.93) in spring and early summer, will also gradually make the moss disappear.
tips
The use of special iron fertilizers is also effective against moss. However, you should only use this if there is actually an iron deficiency (perform a soil analysis). In addition, ferrous sulfate is toxic and should therefore be used with caution.
