The mammoth leaf (bot. Gunnera manicata) is colloquially called giant rhubarb, the resemblance is unmistakable. The space requirement of this impressive leaf perennial is correspondingly high. You should consider this before planting and take this into account when choosing a location.

The mammoth leaf needs a lot of space

The ideal location and the right soil

Do not plant the mammoth leaf in direct sunlight, as it does not feel particularly comfortable there. Partial shade or a sunny place are much better. In addition, there should be high humidity at the location of the giant rhubarb.

The ideal soil for the mammoth leaf is moist and humus and may be slightly acidic. In its Brazilian homeland, it likes to grow in swamps or along stony streams. So it can be planted well at the edge of the pond, in stony or sandy soil, but not directly in the water.

Enormous space requirement

The mammoth leaf is absolutely not suitable for small gardens. It not only grows up to three meters high, but also just as wide. The distance to the neighboring plant should be at least two meters, after all the mammoth leaf grows up to half a meter a year, and a little more under the best conditions.

The ideal planting time

Since the mammoth leaf is considered sensitive to frost, you should only plant it in the garden after the last night frosts. So at least wait for the ice saints in May. In winter, the mammoth leaf can remain in the ground, but should be well protected from frost.

The planting

Dig a sufficiently large planting hole and loosen the soil thoroughly. Then put plenty of well-rotted compost in the planting hole before inserting the mammoth leaf. In the first few weeks, water the young plant plentifully and regularly.

The essentials in brief:

  • Origin: cool and humid areas in southern Brazil
  • Location: partially shaded or shaded
  • Soil: likes slightly moist, stony or sandy, neutral to slightly acidic
  • sprawling growth (up to 3 m high and wide)
  • high nutrient requirements
  • Planting distance: approx. 2 m

tips

Choose the location for your mammoth leaf carefully, it does not tolerate a later change well.
