You can buy Chinese reed as a container plant almost all year round. Many varieties show a particularly attractive autumn coloration, later the stalks and leaves wither. However, this is not a cause for concern, your Chinese reed will sprout again in the spring.
After a cold winter, Chinese reed sprout laterWhen does the expulsion start?
In the case of Chinese reed, budding usually begins relatively late. The sweet grass is hardy and stays in the garden all year round. The budding is therefore dependent on the weather, after a long and/or hard winter it usually begins a little later than after a mild winter.
You can also cultivate your Chinese reed in a bucket. In winter, the root ball should be protected from frost. Remove the winter protection from the end of March, in good time before they sprout, so that the young shoots get enough light. This is the only way for them to become strong and robust. Since the Chinese reed is basically hardy, the last night frosts usually do not damage it.
How big does Chinese reed grow in the first year?
In the first one to two years, Chinese reed hardly reaches its maximum height. The size can vary depending on the soil conditions and weather, but the quality of the plants purchased and the lighting conditions at the location also play a role. However, you should not expect more than about 80 percent of the normal height.
How much space does Chinese reed need?
The exact space requirement of your Chinese reed depends largely on the selected variety. Of course, the giant Chinese reed needs significantly more of it than the relatively small dwarf Chinese reed. The former should have a distance of a good one to one and a half meters to the neighbor, with the latter 80 centimeters to about one meter is enough. If you want to plant Chinese reed as a hedge, then the distance should of course be slightly smaller.
The essentials in brief:

- Cut back before sprouting
- Leave fresh shoots when pruning
- rarely reaches maximum size in the first year
