Growth is a criterion in which the different varieties of Chinese reed (bot. Miscanthus sinensis) differ from each other. This affects both the speed of growth and the maximum height. Even the root formation is different.

Chinese reed can grow impressively large

How do Chinese reed roots grow?

Most varieties of Chinese reed can be assigned to clump-forming plants. Although they continue to spread, they remain relatively compact despite their sometimes enormous size and have no long long root runners (rhizomes). You should use a root barrier for the less rhizome-forming varieties.

The essentials in brief:

  • maximum height of giant Chinese reed: up to 4 m
  • maximum height of dwarf Chinese reed: up to 1 m or 1.5 m
  • daily growth: depending on the variety up to 5 cm
  • usually relatively fast growing
  • Root growth: either clump-forming or rhizome-forming

tips

The giant Chinese reed is very impressive, it is usually about three to three and a half meters high.
