The decorative Chinese reed (bot. Miscanthus sinensis) is available in different sizes and colors. One of them is sure to fit in your garden. The hardy ornamental grass is not difficult to plant and just as easy to care for.

The ideal location
Most strains like light and warmth, the more the better. So treat your Chinese reed to a location that is as sunny as possible, alternatively put it in the light shade. Full shade is generally not suitable for Chinese reed. Here you should at least not count on a bloom.
Prepare the ground well
If you have humus-rich, fresh to moist soil in your garden, then it does not need any special preparation for planting easy-care Chinese reed. Dig a planting hole about twice the size of the reed root ball and pour in some mature compost.
Then plant the Chinese reed about as deep as it was in the container before, maybe a little deeper. Water the reed well, it will be happy to be watered regularly over the next few days. Fertilizing is not necessary in fresh soil.
The ideal planting time
In principle, you can plant the Chinese reed during the entire vegetation phase until autumn. However, planting in the spring makes the most sense. So you can already enjoy your elephant grass in summer and it can take root well into winter.
Spring planting is particularly advantageous in a harsh area so that the Chinese reed can survive the first winter well. Young reeds are only conditionally hardy. If you would like to plant your Chinese reed in a bucket, then the season plays only a minor role and you can take your time.
The essentials in brief:
- ideal planting time: spring (March or April)
- ideal location: sunny
- ideal soil: fresh to moist
- Water well after planting
- Water regularly for a few weeks, but do not fertilize
