Coming from afar, the trumpet flower has to come to terms with an unfamiliar climate in this country. Only if it succeeds can it bloom for more than one summer. Some species manage this easily or get better with each year of life, while others do not at all.

Different species, different hardiness
We know three different types of this climbing plant, which is also known as the trumpet vine:
- American trumpet flower (Campsis radicans)
- the Chinese trumpet flower (Campsis grandiflora)
- the hybrid great trumpet (Campsis tagliabuana)
The Chinese trumpet flower is sensitive to frost. The other two types are different. The varieties of the American trumpet flower are considered hardy down to -15 °C. Hybrid of the Great Trumpet even down to - 20 °C.
importance for cultivation
The Chinese trumpet flower cannot be continuously cultivated outdoors in our latitudes. In order not to have to do without this decorative plant, you can plant it in a large bucket. This species remains mobile in it, which is essential for safe wintering.
The trumpet vine and the American trumpet flower can develop well in a sheltered spot in the garden. A heat-retaining wall nearby is ideal.
Protect young specimens
Young plants of the two hardy species are not yet sufficiently protected against frost. As long as their shoots are not lignified, they need extra protection in winter. The base of the plant must be covered with a thick layer of foliage or brushwood. The tendrils themselves can be wrapped with fleece.
tips
If you plan to propagate the trumpet flower yourself, you should overwinter the tender plants indoors for the first winter and only plant them out in the following spring.
Trumpet flowers overwinter in the bucket
The Chinese trumpet should overwinter in a frost-free winter quarters. A bright place with a temperature between 10 and 12 °C is ideal. Even during this time, the care of the plant must not rest, but is limited to needs-based watering.
Such a roost is also ideal for other species that are planted in tubs. But you can also spend the winter outside in a sheltered place. But not without first being wrapped in fleece and placed on a styrofoam plate (€35.50).
