- Vegetative propagation is easy
- The ideal time
- Plant them or let them float in the water
- Favorable breeding conditions in the aquarium
Waterweed is a popular plant because it enriches ponds and aquariums. If a specimen already exists, it is rarely necessary to buy additional plants. Propagation is so easy that it can hardly go wrong.
multiply waterweed? Nothing easier than that!Vegetative propagation is easy
Waterweed is very easy to propagate vegetatively. A head cutting or just a section of the plant at least 2 cm long that does not have to have roots is sufficient for this. Getting both shouldn't be difficult, because the waterweed is known for its meter-long and branched shoots.
You can also take a piece of waterweed from a natural body of water, because this aquatic plant is not under protection. Transport the waterweed in a bag filled with water to keep it from drying out.
The ideal time
The waterweed can be reproduced in the aquarium at any time, as it usually finds constant conditions there all year round. In the pond, propagation can begin in spring, around April.
Plant them or let them float in the water
You can plant both head cuttings and the section in the substrate or let them swim in the water. Since the placement of the various plants in the aquarium plays a decisive role, you should rather plant the propagation material. A place in the back of the tank is ideal so that waterweed does not shade other plants due to its proliferation.
- remove lower leaves
- Put the head cutting or section in the ground
- The ideal water depth in the pond is 30 cm to 2 m
- Initial fertilization is not necessary
tips
Do not overdo it with the propagation by putting many pieces in the pond or in the aquarium. Otherwise, you may soon have to fight the proliferating water plague.
Favorable breeding conditions in the aquarium
Now all you have to do is make sure that the planted propagation piece finds ideal living conditions so that it takes root and sprout again.
- constant temperature up to max. 28 °C
- CO2 per liter: 10-20 mg
- lots of light
tips
Since an Argentine waterweed growing in a pond is only partially hardy, you can hibernate a piece in the aquarium and use it to propagate new plants for the pond from spring.
