Unfortunately, due to the increasing development and the resulting deforestation of trees, birds are finding fewer and fewer places to retreat to raise their brood. A nesting box allows the animals to breed in the immediate vicinity of people. Do you still have a few old flower pots? Perfect, then build your own nesting box. You can find out how to do this on this page.

building instructions
Required material
- a clay pot
- two wooden discs with the diameters of the clay pot opening and its bottom
- a threaded rod slightly longer than the pot
- three nuts
- a dowel
- and a drill press
Step-by-step instructions
- In the small disc you fasten the dowel for hanging on the wall
- Also attach the threaded rod to the small disc with two nuts about a centimeter from the edge
- Also on the large disc drill a hole for the threaded rod
- Drill the entrance hole on the other half of the wooden disc
- Now put all the parts together (the large wooden disc is also fastened with a nut) and attach the flower pot nesting box (49.85 €) to a wall
Tips and things worth knowing
- Depending on the size of the entrance hole you have chosen, different species of birds will nest in your self-made nesting box
- Do not hang the nest box too low (minimum height 2 m) so that it remains inaccessible to cats
- The interior of the flower pot can heat up quickly. Therefore, do not hang the nesting box in direct sunlight
- If you build several flower pot nest boxes, you must ensure sufficient spacing when hanging them
- Pad the inside of the flower pot with some soft straw
- Impregnate the wooden discs so that no mold forms in damp conditions
- If you like, you can paint your flower pot nest box colorfully before hanging it up
- A nesting box made of a clay pot not only attracts birds but also bumblebees
