The tayberry has not yet conquered the market with many varieties, and is often simply offered under the name tayberry. If you do a bit of searching, you can discover one or the other. We present three varieties that are in demand.

The tayberry variety Medana has particularly large fruits

Tayberry Buckingham

The Buckingham variety grows like a bush, with numerous overhanging shoots. It is a thornless cultivar that makes it easy to pick and cut. In a sunny spot it can reach a height of up to 1.8 m and a width of up to 2.5 m. It is advisable to attach its branches to a trellis, then they will form more berries.

The first white flowers appear from May and the first berries are ready to eat from mid-June. They are characterized by the following features:

  • are elongated and dark red
  • the taste is sweet and sour,
  • the flesh is juicy

Harvest time lasts until August. The berries of this variety taste best fresh from the bush, but can also be processed into jam, jelly, juice or cake.

Tayberry Easy Tay

Easy Tay is a thornless variant of the tayberry, which draws on the gene pool of its parents, the raspberry and blackberry, in terms of taste. The shrub has a compact habit and the fruits ripen from June to July.

  • ideal for jelly and jam

Tayberry Medana

The Medina variety forms upright shoots that, with good care, can reach a height of almost 2 m and a width of up to 2.5 m. It should also be grown on a trellis, which will not least make the harvest easier. Because this variety still has thorns! The flowering period is in May and June. The first berries ripen at the end of June.

  • large, red berries
  • oblong shaped
  • sweet-sour, distinctive aroma

Harvest time lasts until August. The berries are a treat both fresh and in desserts. They can also be processed well into jams and jellies.

tips

A tayberry can also grow in a tub and stand on a sunny terrace or balcony. This strain is good for this, but also for small gardens.
