Compared to other basil varieties, shrub basil is considered to be extremely robust. It endures some adverse living conditions such as heat and drought. But freezing cold is definitely not one of the challenges that this plant can handle. That is why your saving intervention is required!

Shrub basil has to spend the winter indoors

Lack of winter suitability

Shrub basil is perennial, but in this country it sometimes has to go through harsh winters. Unfortunately, unfortunately, it is not hardy! Direct confrontation with sub-zero temperatures is inevitably paid for with life. But even just above zero, its vitality is threatened.

An informed owner will plan ahead when purchasing the herb. This type of basil is often cultivated in a tub, which makes it easier to overwinter indoors.

Notice:
Specimens in the garden bed must also overwinter indoors. To do this, they must be carefully dug up and placed in a large pot.

Moving earlier is advisable

It should be ensured that the shrub basil does not have to experience a single day of frost. However, it is more ideal if it moves into the house as soon as the days become more uncomfortable. The limit for this is 10 °C. I also like this basil in the house and can still sprout a few leaves in autumn.

tips

If the weather gods give away a few more sunny days after the move, you can put the basil outside again by the hour.

Acceptable winter quarters

On still warm autumn days, the basil on a south-facing window can fill up with light and warmth. It keeps growing and you can keep harvesting from it. In winter, however, it deserves a rest. Make the pot cooler and adjust care.

  • Room temperature should be between 15 and 20 °C
  • higher values are not tolerated
  • therefore do not place it near a heater
  • the thermometer should not fall below 10 °C either
  • its place should be light and airy
  • Avoid drafts
  • water moderately but regularly
  • avoid both waterlogging and ball dryness
  • continue to fertilize with herb fertilizer

tips

Before hibernation, you can cut back the shrub basil so that it takes up less space. The edible sprouts can be used immediately in the kitchen, or dried or frozen for later use.
