Zinc tubs have a very special charm as a garden accessory. They usually serve as flower pots or house a mini pond. But it is precisely these uses that lead to visible soiling after a few years. If you don't want to do without the beautiful garden decoration, read on this page how you can clean your zinc tub in no time at all.

If the zinc tub is only galvanized iron, no abrasive cleaning agent should be used

Check material in advance

Although there is no visual difference, not every zinc tank is actually made of zinc. Those models are actually made of iron, which is only coated with a galvanized layer. You can recognize the dummy by its rusty spots. In this case, you must not use any scouring agents, as these cause permanent damage to the material. Even "harmless" home remedies such as vinegar or citric acid dissolve the protective layer. With galvanized iron, this does not form again. If you don't rub the layer of a real zinc tank too hard, with a bit of luck the material will repair itself.

  • neutral detergent
  • or soda
  • or special descaler
  • a cleaning cloth

Action

  1. Remove the coarse dirt by rinsing the tub under clear water.
  2. Put neutral detergent in a bucket of water.
  3. Dip a cloth in it and wring it out well.
  4. Wipe the tub with the cloth.
  5. Follow the same procedure when using soda.
  6. A special cleaner has proven its worth for limescale deposits.
  7. Then rinse the tub with water.
  8. Dry the tub with a cloth.
  9. By allowing the tub to rest in air, you encourage the formation of a new protective oxide layer.
  10. Wait a few days before filling the tub with water or soil.

Note: Never use aggressive cleaning agents that contain chemical substances. In particular, if you use your zinc tub as a mini biotope, the residents will suffer a great deal of damage.
