Mediterranean herbs feel right at home in the zinc tub

manual

Prepare zinc tub

  1. Drill a hole in the bottom to prevent waterlogging.
  2. Cover the hole with a potsherd.
  3. Pour a layer of sawdust into the zinc tub.
  4. Layer potting soil on top of this up to approx. 10 cm below the edge.
  5. Now you can already plant your zinc tub.

Appropriate herbs

Basically, all varieties are suitable for cultivation in a zinc tub. Of course, you should make sure when combining that all plants have the same location requirements. You can even mix in vegetables with the selection if you like. Here is a small list of selected herbs:

  • thyme
  • chives
  • oregano
  • lavender
  • rosemary

location

You should place your zinc tub in a sheltered location. Whether the herbs get direct sunlight or are more in the semi-shade depends on your selection. Due to their origin, Mediterranean herbs prefer the blazing sun.
A big advantage of the zinc tub as a garden bed is that snails have a hard time getting to the plants. A zinc tub is therefore a recommended alternative to a raised bed.

harvest herbs

Many herbs are perennial and will provide you with care for a long time if cared for appropriately. However, if they start to bloom or overgrow each other, you should cut back the plants heavily and think about another zinc tub. Only ever harvest as large an amount as you currently need. It would be a shame to throw away the herbs. If you misjudge the portion, preserve the herbs by freezing or drying them.
