In summer they are in full bloom and enrich every garden with their scent. But what the queen of flowers gives her gardener in summer, she demands back in winter. Then the rose needs a lot of attention when preparing the winter protection. This article tells you how to do everything right.

Twigs protect sensitive rose roots from frost

Different conditions

Adequate winter protection for roses must be adapted to the type of cultivation. Depending on whether you keep your roses outdoors or in pots, the following measures are necessary:

Winter protection outdoors

  • Protect the graft site from frost and drying out by piling up compost, brushwood, or garden soil about 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) from the trunk.

Winter protection in the bucket

  • Insulate the bucket with a coconut mat, jute, bubble wrap or straw.
  • Store the planter high (underlay made of styrofoam, place it on a plant trolley or on a garden table).
  • Protect the upper part of the plant from the wind.

Winter protection for individual plant parts

Protect the crown from frost

  1. Put a jute bag (€10.99) or fleece over the crown.
  2. Alternatively, pinch fir twigs between the branches.
  3. Only cut back in spring.

Protect the trunk from frost

In the case of strong temperature fluctuations (winter sun during the day and icy night frost), cracks often form in the stem of the rose. They give fungi the best opportunity to get inside the plant. Therefore, it is important to avoid the cracks as follows:

  1. Wrap ribbons of sheep's wool, felt or jute around the trunk.
  2. Also put on a winter protection mat.

Protect the roots from frost

The roots are the most delicate part of the rose. Especially with potted plants, the moisture in the substrate threatens to freeze. Without adequate winter protection, this will result in the death of the plant.

  1. Place the rose in a sheltered spot.
  2. Avoid direct contact with the ground (e.g. stand on a styrofoam plate (€35.50)).
  3. Insulate bucket.
  4. Cover substrate with bark mulch or compost.
  5. Water moderately on frost-free days.
