The best time to plant this bulbous plant, which is indispensable in many German kitchens, is autumn. The tubers grow larger than when planted in spring, but the problem with possible pests increases a little, because this gives the garlic fly a lot of time for its destructive work. Anyone who now brings garlic to the beds should protect their plants with a crop protection net or plenty of vegetable growing fleece.

Tubers planted in the fall will get bigger

Otherwise, the great tuber is extremely easy to care for and is also suitable for self-planting in raised beds as well as on the balcony and, if necessary, even on the kitchen windowsill. Your garlic harvest next spring will be particularly aromatic, flavorful and healthy if you use local and naturally fresh garlic, if possible from the region, for your own cultivation.

Hardly any effort with your own garlic cultivation

From mid-September, the undamaged garlic cloves, which have previously been separated from the bulb, are planted about two to three centimeters into the ground with the base of the bulb pointing downwards. The optimal planting distance is at least ten centimeters, the planting depth no more than three centimeters. Professionals stick their toes a little at an angle into the prepared planting holes and thus avoid possible root rot, which can damage the young plants in particular if there is excessive autumn rain. Since garlic prefers loose soil, it is best to add a little compost mixed with some sand to the soil when planting. Even if garlic is generally considered to be hardy, it can't hurt if the plants are protected from sub-zero temperatures with a cover of straw or mulch (€239.00) during the cold season. Depending on how the autumn weather shows up in terms of temperatures, regular weeding by hand while loosening the soil at the same time makes a significant contribution to ensuring that your garlic is not only juicy and large at harvest, but also a culinary hit.

From the difficult path to the real garlic plants

Anyone who regularly visits our garden portal already knows at least a little about the common types of garlic. But: Where are there actually such plants that are suitable for self-cultivation in the garden? If you look for sources in the garden trade, you will quickly notice that the variety of garlic has simply been lost. Chinese garlic is more than dominant, which is hardly surprising given the asking prices. We therefore researched a little more thoroughly in the German-speaking area and essentially found two sources of supply that could almost pass as insider tips.

And he actually still exists, the real garlic farmer. Although not here in Germany, but in Austria, Wolfgang Mayr has bred more than 50 different types of garlic as part of his pure breeding program, which range in terms of their aromatic properties from mild to very hot. He is already drying the 2022 harvest in his attics and a fairly wide range of his delicacies can be viewed and bought on the "Schaetzeausoesterreich" page.

Not quite as large, but certainly no less delicious is the range of aroma gardens from Werder an der Havel, where older German garlic plants are also available.
