Every Indian banana gets a random, individual genetic mix from the seed on its way through life. It also affects the size and flavor of the fruit. However, if we don't want to leave anything to chance, we have to graft the sapling. Then it will produce fruit according to new specifications.

Refined Indian bananas bear higher quality fruit

Only root suckers or seedlings of your own species may be used as a base. Since sensitive roots in this tree species make it difficult to transplant root suckers, seedlings are better suited as a rootstock. They should be 1-2 years old. You can grow these yourself from seeds beforehand.

scions

In order to get scions for grafting, a suitable tree must be available whose fruit is convincing in its entirety. Scions can be harvested from the beginning of winter until March. The harvest day should be sunny and frost-free. Since the best time for grafting has not come until May, the shoots must be kept quiet until then.

  • Stick the ends about 10-15 cm deep in moist sand
  • alternatively wrap in a damp, translucent cloth
  • damp newspaper is also suitable
  • keep moist but not too wet
  • Travelers are not allowed to drive out
  • ideal temperature in the storage room is 2 - 4 degrees Celsius

Notice:
The refrigerator is not a suitable storage location. The high humidity in it can lead to mold growth.

finishing

There are different finishing methods. All require specialist knowledge, skill and experience. Therefore, they should be left to the professionals if possible. For those who still want to try it, a simplified procedure can be recommended, which is called the chip method.

  1. Remove the scion into a chip-shaped piece about 3.4 cm in size. There should be a bud on it.
  2. Make a custom-fit indentation in the bark of the pad.
  3. Place the chip on the indentation.
  4. Connect the base and the chip with a finishing tape.
  5. Once the chip has washed into the backing and sprout, cut off the overlying portion of the backing.

tips

The success of the refinement is not only linked to precise work. You must also ensure that you work sterilely so that no germs reach the grafting site.
