The helichrysum (Helichrysum bracteatum) originally comes from Australia and is now cultivated in a large number of subspecies in European gardens. In a suitable location, this plant requires very little maintenance throughout the gardening season.

The needs of the helichrysum
Everlasting flowers are naturally used to getting by with very little water. Therefore, this plant gets along very well on comparatively dry soils. In addition, the helichrysum can also cover relatively barren soil with an abundance of flowers. However, the plants should receive enough sunlight and heat so that they can develop healthily. Since most types of helichrysum are usually relatively sensitive to frost, they should only be planted outdoors after the ice saints.
Choose the right location for the helichrysum
With the helichrysum you can also plant areas in the garden where it is very hot, sunny and dry. For example, straw flowers are suitable for:
- dry, south-facing slopes
- pots on the terrace
- window boxes
If necessary, the plant substrate should be mixed with some sand so that the roots of the helichrysum do not become waterlogged. Since straw flowers in balcony boxes are more exposed to the sun and the dry wind, you should water straw flowers on the balcony a little more regularly than in the garden bed.
tips
Since the colors of the flowers are still very appealing when they are dried, they are popular elements in dried bouquets. To do this, the flowers of the helichrysum are cut off before they open and hung upside down in a dark place to dry.
