A flower bulb contains everything important for the growth of the leaves and flowers. What role does fertilization play? Or does it not matter at all? Yes, because even the best reserve of energy is eventually exhausted. But the onion should bloom again every year.

Flower bulbs also need nutrients

Fertilize to guarantee flowering

Newly planted flower bulbs will also sprout without fertilization. They are also in full bloom. But the first year is only the beginning of their existence. Perennial flower bulbs in particular should bloom for many years in a row without fading.

In order for bulbous plants to continue to delight us after the first year, they must be supplied with the nutrients they have used up again. Therefore, it makes sense to fertilize them as needed.

Appropriate fertilizer

The trade even has a special flower bulb fertilizer ready for flower bulbs. If you reach for it, you can be on the safe side. Because it contains a combination of nutrients that is optimally tailored to onion plants.

However, it is far from the case that other fertilizers are insufficient. These also serve the purpose:

  • a commercially available organic-mineral fertilizer
  • the inexpensive blue grain
  • liquid flower fertilizer

It is important that the nutrients are available quickly. Therefore, a long-term fertilizer such as horn shavings (32.93€) is unsuitable for flower bulbs. Small onions can also be supplied with compost in the spring.

period of time for nutrient dosing

Fertilize in the spring when the bulbous plants come to life. As soon as the green shows, it can and should be fertilized.

  • Budding depends on the weather
  • it is usually in March
  • sometimes earlier
  • Fertilize 2-3 times per growing season

Only fertilize until flowering. Because soon after that, above-ground growth stops. The plants withdraw into the tuber.

tips

After flowering, leave the leaves on until they wither. In the meantime, they ensure onion growth.

This is how it is fertilized

The flower bulb fertilizer should be used according to the manufacturer's instructions. Otherwise, the following applies: A handful of fertilizer per plant group is sufficient. If you like, you can carefully rake the fertilizer into the soil. But it is not necessary. The very next rain will loosen the nutrients and allow them to seep into the soil.

Flower bulbs in a pot

If you plant flower bulbs in balcony boxes, fertilizing is a must. If they become lazy over the years, the old soil should also be completely replaced with fresh ones.
